12,000 btu Portable Air Conditioners

Portable air conditioners work by drawing the warm air in the room into the unit. It is cooled down in the unit then blown back out. A portable air conditioner also works as a dehumidifier for an extra cool feeling by taking the extra moisture out of the air.

The size of the room the portable air conditioner is able to cool is determined by its BTUs (British Thermal Units). A 9,000 BTU unit will cool a 200 foot room. The majority of larger rooms, 500 suare feet or more can be cooled by a 12,000 BTU unit.

The good thing about portable air conditioners is that they are not confined to one space - hence the name portable. Where you place the unit is not dependent on whether there is an appropriate window. Units are usually on some type of wheel system so it can be moved around as needed.

Since portable air conditioners also act as dehumidifiers you normally have to have somewhere for the water to go. All units have some type of gravity hose through which the water is drained. Many units have buckets that can be emptied manually. Some have pumps that can move the water upwards to be drained where you want it to go.
